Milky way over Grant Lake
This photo was taken at Grant Lake, which is about 6 miles west of Mono Lake in the Inyo National Forest, California,. The night I took this photo it was very dark, no moon, no lights at all. It was challenging to set up the tripod and camera and find the right spot to stand in complete darkness, I couldn't see my own hands or feet. I was using a headlamp with red light. Red light has the advantage that doesn't preclude your eyes' night vision like white light does, so after 20 minutes or so I was able to see a tiny bit in darkness due to the light coming from the stars and was also able to distinguish clearly the position of the Milky Way and compose the picture. The lights on right and left of the frame are coming from two campgrounds, probably lanterns outside people's tents, amplified significantly by the high sensitivity settings used.
